A New York man has pleaded guilty in federal court in Bangor, Maine to charges of possessing heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine base with intent to distribute. The plea was entered by Oscarlin Peguero Ortiz, 27, following an investigation led by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
Court documents show that authorities began investigating suspected drug trafficking from a residence in Avon. In July 2020, law enforcement executed a search warrant at the property and found Ortiz inside. Officers seized about 85 grams of a mixture containing heroin and fentanyl, as well as 40 grams of crack cocaine. Additional items confiscated included digital scales, drug paraphernalia, and over $8,000 in cash.
Ortiz faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $1 million, and at least three years—and up to life—of supervised release. Sentencing will take place after the U.S. Probation Office completes its presentence investigative report. The final sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge who will consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines along with other legal factors.
The case was investigated by multiple agencies: the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Maine State Police, Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
