The Maine Judicial Branch warned on Apr. 16 of a widespread text messaging scam that falsely claims to be from the “State of Maine in the District Court of Cumberland County Traffic Division.”

The warning is important because it addresses an ongoing attempt to defraud residents by using official-sounding language and technology to trick recipients into making payments or giving away personal information.

According to the statement, the fraudulent notice appears to be generated by artificial intelligence and instructs recipients to make payments through a QR code. The Judicial Branch advises, “If you receive one of these messages, do not click on the link and do not provide any personal information in response. If you have a question about a traffic violation please call the Violations Bureau.” A copy of the scam notice has been made available for reference.

The Maine Judicial Branch operates within the judicial sector and serves residents statewide according to its official website. It includes several courts such as the Supreme Judicial Court, Superior Courts, District Courts, and Administrative Court according to its official website. The branch also provides public access to court records and case information according to its official website.

As part of its role in contributing to the rule of law in Maine, the branch aims to administer justice through Maine’s courts according to its official website.

Residents are encouraged by officials not only to avoid engaging with suspicious communications but also remain vigilant against scams that misuse trusted institutions’ names.
