The Maine Supreme Judicial Court and the Maine Board of Bar Examiners announced on May 6 that they will begin accepting transferred scores at the NextGen passing standard of 620 starting in 2026.

This decision comes as the NextGen bar examination is set to debut in other jurisdictions beginning July 2026, although Maine itself will not administer the exam until July 2028. The announcement aims to ensure a smooth transition for applicants seeking admission to practice law in Maine.

“Although Maine is not administering the NextGen examination until July 2028, we recognize that it is set to debut in other jurisdictions starting in July 2026 and want to ensure a smooth and open transition,” officials said.

The Maine Judicial Branch contributes to upholding the rule of law, serves residents statewide, and provides public access to court records and case information through its courts system, according to the official website. The branch includes several courts such as the Supreme Judicial Court, Superior Courts, District Courts, and Administrative Court. It operates within the judicial sector and aims to administer justice throughout Maine.
