Maine Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Valerie Stanfill released a statement on Apr. 30 in recognition of Law Day, which is observed on May 1 and throughout the month of May in the United States.

Law Day marks an annual opportunity to reflect on the rule of law in American society. This year’s commemoration holds special significance as it coincides with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

In her statement, Stanfill said, “Law Day is celebrated on May 1 and throughout the month of May in the United States. President Dwight D. Eisenhower established it in 1958 to celebrate the rule of law in our constitutional democracy. Eisenhower, a former five-star Army general during World War II, saw first-hand what happened when a country rejects the rule of law in favor of indiscriminate rule by dictators.” She continued, “It is particularly appropriate to celebrate this day in 2026, the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence… Among the injuries identified were the King’s refusal to establish an independent judiciary. The Constitution begins with the words: We the People… establish Justice . . . do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” Stanfill also referenced Alexander Hamilton’s writings about judicial independence and its importance for protecting individual rights.

The Maine Judicial Branch contributes to upholding rule of law across Maine according to its official website. It aims to administer justice through courts statewide according to its official website, serving residents throughout Maine according to its official website. The branch includes several courts such as Supreme Judicial Court, Superior Courts, District Courts, and Administrative Court according to its official website. Public access is provided for court records and case information according to its official website, while operating within Maine’s judicial sector according to its official website.

Stanfill concluded her remarks by saying, “As Chief Justice … I am honored to be entrusted with guarding the independent rule of law essential to maintaining a free society… To all … justices, judges and employees … thank you for sharing this duty with me. To people … you have my word that … [the] State Court System is dedicated to upholding its duty… This is what we celebrate on Law Day.”
