A Lewiston resident, Kulmiye Abukar Idris, has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm. The sentencing took place on November 18 in U.S. District Court in Portland.

U.S. District Judge John A. Woodcock, Jr. ordered that Idris’s federal sentence will be served consecutively after his current 42-month state prison term for gross sexual assault. After completing both sentences, Idris will also be subject to three years of supervised release.

Court documents show that in January 2025, Lewiston police stopped a vehicle driven by Idris for traffic violations. During the stop, officers searched the vehicle and found a handgun. At the time of the incident, Idris had a prior conviction from 2024 for gross sexual assault in Androscoggin County, which prohibited him from owning or possessing firearms.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Lewiston Police Department, with support from the Androscoggin County District Attorney’s Office.

“Operation Take Back America: This case is part of Operation Take Back America a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.”
